Jeremy Rowsell completes ground-breaking journey with revolutionary recycled plastic fuel

Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT), one of the world’s leading specialty-focused providers of insurance, reinsurance and employee benefits related advice, brokerage and associated services, is pleased to announce Jeremy Rowsell, Managing Director, National Placement has landed safely in Melbourne, creating aviation history in the world’s first plastic fuelled plane.

This historic flight from Sydney to Melbourne forms part of the On Wings of Waste project, an ambitious and bold attempt to courageously raise awareness about end-of-life plastic waste in our oceans and to highlight its potential benefits as a new source of fuel. The JLT supported light aircraft flew over 500 nautical miles on a combination of conventional fuel and 10% plastic fuel.

Environmental pioneer pilot Jeremy Rowsell, Managing Director, National Placement said, “We have proved end-of-life plastic waste can be transformed from a pollutant into a viable alternative jet A1 fuel and can also be used for any diesel engines. This plastic would otherwise end up in a landfill or in our oceans, where it takes hundreds of years to degrade.”

Leo Demer, CEO of JLT Australia and New Zealand said, “We are honoured to support this experimental work by one of our people. We hope that Jeremy’s inspiring story ignites a global campaign to change the way we use plastic and fuel to help address the world’s increasing pollution exposures. Our culture of innovation, pushing boundaries and different ways of thinking extends through every individual who works for JLT, supporting our clients to achieve even greater success.”

Currently an insurance specialist in Australia’s leading placement team, Jeremy is also a ferry and commercial pilot with over 50,000km of flying experience over the Pacific. Over the past few years, he has dedicated his spare time to the On Wings of Waste project to bring the world’s attention to plastic pollution.

JLT’s distinctive working environment fuels the passion of employees in both their personal and professional lives. The entrepreneurial drive of employees like Jeremy allows them to go beyond the routine, collaborate and deliver better results for all our clients.
